ENGLISH COMMON NAME: Stevia Leaf

ALSO KNOWN AS: stevia, candyleaf, sweetleaf

LATIN NAME: stevia rebaudiana
Plant Family: Asteraceae

PART(S) USED: Leaves

OVERVIEW: Stevia comes from a group of plants that are native to South America. In tropical regions it grows as an evergreen shrub. However, in temperate regions it can be grown as an annual or herbaceous perennial.

Considered an herbal supplement, the leaf is about 100 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar, but has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients. The body does not metabolize the glycosides in stevia, so it contains zero calories like some artificial sweeteners. Stevia's taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar, and some of its extracts may have a bitter or licorice-like aftertaste at high concentrations.

PREPARATIONS: Keep dry. Store in an airtight container in a dry cupboard away from light. Will keep for many years. Can be used as a sweetener and/or added to herbal teas.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: Consult with a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an allergy to ragweed and/or related plants, or if you have diabetes and/or low blood pressure.

We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have allergies, or are on any medications. Although most herbs are generally safe, it is recommended that you avoid self-prescribing especially when there is an underlying ongoing medical condition.
