ENGLISH COMMON NAME: Sacred White Copal;

ALSO KNOWN AS: Mexican Copal, Copal-Blanco.

LATIN NAME: Bursera bipinnata

PLANT FAMILY: Burseraceae

PART(S) USED: Dried resin

OVERVIEW: Copal is a name given to tree resins from a variety of genera; many of which are identified with the aromatic resins used by the cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica as ceremonially burned incense. More generally, the term copal describes resinous substances in an intermediate stage between "gummier" resins and amber. Copal has long been used in ancient Maya and Aztec ceremonies as a ritual offering to the gods. It is still used by indigenous people in southern Mexico and Central America during sweat lodge ceremonies as well as sacred mushroom ceremonies.

When burned as an incense, White Copal has a sweet scent reminiscent of burnt caramel, with light floral notes.

PREPARATIONS: The resin is placed on hot coals for spiritual cleansing.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: Not for internal use. As with any herb or medicine that is lit, exercise caution when smoke is produced. If any symptoms occur (coughing or eye-watering, etc.) extinguish the product and make sure the area is well-ventilated. Talk to your doctor before using if you are on any medication or if you suffer from diabetes. Use caution if you have allergies. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have allergies, or are on any medications. Although most herbs are generally safe, it is recommended that you avoid self-prescribing especially when there is an underlying ongoing medical condition.
