Golden Feather Initiative - Ways that TLTP supports the community
Turtle Lodge Trading Post Inc. (TLTP) supports the community in many different ways.
Since 2001, C.E.O. Karen Bisson has been a long-time volunteer for Circle of All Nations (CAN) founded by Algonquin Elder William Commanda. Many CAN products are now available through TLTP. Most of the proceeds for those items go directly back to CAN in some form or another.
Several years ago, TLTP also began the process of donating smudge bundle kits and other supplies several times a year to homeless outreach programs, including We Live in the Shadows/Shawna's Outreach, and Shawenjeagamik, a Homeless Partnering Strategy run by theOdawa Native Friendship Centre, at 910 Rideau St in Ottawa.
Although we often send a variety of different products, the bundles we created generally contained a cloth pouch, a shell, a feather, and some White Sage, Sweetgrass and Cedar. We also manufactured a pinback button designed with the Shawenjeagamik address and logo, overlaid on top of an image of a Golden Feather (to help guide our brothers and sisters home) and included one in every bundle.
We started calling this The Golden Feather Initiative because it is the manifestation of a vision that TLTP's C.E.O. Karen Bisson, has carried for many years. "We never turn away anyone who is truly in need and can't afford it. For some people, just touching and smelling the scent of these amazing sacred medicines is enough to initiate the healing process. Having your own tools puts you in the driver seat. These tools and medicines trigger a reminder of the spirit of Ginawaydaganuk, that thing inside of us that recognizes that we are all connected to this Planet and to the entire Universe. Smudging can be a powerful, life-changing experience. I really believe in this initiative. It's a call to healing and a message of hope. It says we love you... we got you... and indeed we are all in this together!"
Note that a portion of allCircle of All Nations (CAN) productssold on this website now also goes to support these initiatives as generously contributed by Romola Thumbado, William Commanda's long time companion and co-director for CAN.
In addition to the above, there are always random projects of all kinds that we are involved in. Whether its lending a hand with our labour, skills, or whatever products we can provide, the TLTP crew is always happy to lend a hand.
