ENGLISH COMMON NAME: Frankincense Tears

ALSO KNOWN AS: frankincense resin, bible frankincense, olibanum

LATIN NAME: Boswellia sacra

PLANT FAMILY: Burseraceae

PART(S) USED: Dried resin collected from the trunk, used as incense, or processed into oils.

OVERVIEW: Frankincense and the oil produced from it has been known for its magical powers and its ability to improve communication with the Creator in the Middle East for thousands of years before it was made a gift to Christ by the Magi. There are over 52 references to it in the Bible. Egyptian records show a great many references to it, including its use in cosmetics, perfumes, as a topical soothing agent, and as an embalming agent.  Frankincense contains boswellic acid, which may help fight inflammation. Recent studies indicate that it may target free radicals and cytokines, all of which play a role in inflammation. A number of studies have linked inflammation to cancer. The role of Frankincense in reducing inflammation could have important implications for cancer treatment.

PREPARATIONS: Store in an airtight container in a dry cupboard away from light. Will keep for many years. The resin is placed on hot coals for spiritual cleansing.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: Not for internal use. As with any herb or medicine that is lit, exercise caution when smoke is produced. If any symptoms occur (coughing or eye-watering, etc…) extinguish the product and make sure the area is well-ventilated. Talk to your doctor before using if you are on any medication or if you suffer from diabetes. Use caution if you have allergies. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have allergies, or are on any medications.  Although most herbs are generally safe, it is recommended that you avoid self-prescribing especially when there is an underlying ongoing medical condition.
