Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
All of our herbs come from certified organic sources or trusted wildcrafters.
ALSO KNOWN AS: mint, candy mint
PLANT FAMILY: Lamiaceae
PART(S) USED: Dried leaves
OVERVIEW: Peppermint is a natural hybrid of spearmint and water mint. It contains an essential oil that is unique among mints for its quality and flavor. Artificial mint compounds do not effectively duplicate the aroma or medicinal properties.
TRADITIONAL USES: Traditionally known for its healthful properties, it has various applications in food preparation. Peppermint leaf is commonly steeped as tea but is also popular in herbal tea blends and candies.
It is said to aid digestion, and to relieve flatulent dyspepsia (carminative), nausea, and vomiting. It can be mildly stimulating and some companies in Japan are said to introduce peppermint oil into their air conditioning systems to invigorate the workers and increase their productivity.
