Spruce Tips DRIED
All of our herbs come from certified organic sources or trusted wildcrafters.
PLANT FAMILY: Pinaceae
PART(S) USED: Dried Spruce tips from spring 2021 growth. We are pretty sure these are Norway Spruces (Picea abies). A large crop of them were intentionally planted here before we bought our land and are all fully grown now. Norway Spruce is a non-native species, but is thought to be as equally potent as native species.
OVERVIEW: While it is well known that the Spruce tree is commonly used as a Christmas Tree in North American homes, all parts of the Spruce tree have been used traditionally by indigenous peoples, both as a medicine and as material for crafting and building. The tips of the spruce tree are harvested in early spring, and are used both fresh and dried.
TRADITIONAL USES: Known especially for its high levels of Vitamins A and C, Spruce tips were once used to prevent and treat scurvy. Today, it is commonly used in teas and cooking, and is the main ingredient in the popular Canadian soda, Spruce Beer. Spruce Tips have also been known to have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, traditionally used both internally to treat colds and coughs, and externally to treat rashes and bug bites. Spruce tips can also be used to add a citrus flavor to sauces, syrups, and baked goods.
STORAGE: Keep dry. Store in an airtight container in a dry cupboard away from light.
