All of our herbs come from certified organic sources or trusted wildcrafters.

ALSO KNOWN AS: hen-of-the-woods, ram's head or sheep's head.

PLANT FAMILY: Meripilaceae

OVERVIEW: Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is a polypore mushroom that grows at the base of trees, particularly oaks. It is typically found in late summer to early autumn. It is native to North America, Europe and China. It is a perennial fungus that often grows in the same place for a number of years in succession. The species is a choice edible mushroom. The softer caps must be thoroughly cooked.

TRADITIONAL USE: Maitake has been traditionally used in herbal medicine to support the immune system. Preliminary studies suggest that Maitake may be effective for lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, and improving cholesterol; however, there is not yet enough information on its effectiveness in humans.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: Consult a healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, on any medications (especially those for diabetes and blood pressure), or have any allergies, especially to mushrooms or other fungi in the Meripilaceae family. Discontinue use two weeks prior to any surgery.
